The Connacht senior handball championships were held in Moycullen this weekend and the local star, Martin Mulkerrins - playing in his 1st senior championships was crowned champion.
Mulkerrins came through the tough side of the draw beating Mayo's Vinnie Moran in the quarter final, 21-17, 21-11. Later, on Saturday, his semi final encounter with Joe McCann, ranked number 6 in Ireland, finished on a 21-11, 21-9 score line to set up Sunday's final against Mayo's Stephen Cooney.
Iin what proved to be a battle royale after 52 minutes of play the Galway ace won 21-20 in a grueling first game witnessed by a packed gallery. The tribesman left nothing to chance in the second and with a blistering display of kill shots and pin-point accurate passing shots he ran into an 18-1 lead and saw out the second to win comfortably on a 21-3 scoreline.
Mulkerrins, already nominated as the Co. Galway and Connacht young male player of the year for 2012 has signalled his arrival on the senior stage in impressive manner by winning the all -Ireland Minor, All-Ireland Intermediate and now the senior provincial championships in as many consecutive years.
