Williamstown One Wall 2013 24th – 26th May 2013.

Once again a large group of over 230 players descended on the Williamstown Handball Sports and Handball Complex to participate in the annual one wall tournament over the weekend.

With each grade packed to capacity the games got under way at 6pm on the Friday evening and lasted all the way to Sunday evening. The weekend saw some really fantastic handball and each and every coach throughout the country must deserve huge praise at the standard set down by the players from U11 to U18.

Ciana retains Ladies Open Title.

Ciana Ní Churraoin regained the Mullins Engineering Ladies Open in Williamstown with an emphatic display of power and kills that could only leave one wondering if there is anyone out there to stop her from going for three in a row next year. Deirdre Donohoe, the inaugural champion of 2010 was left wondering what had happened after the first game was closed out by the Gaeltacht star on a score line of 15/2. The second game started more positively for Deirdre and she led 2/0 early on. She seemed to find her feet and played more confidently in the second game. She picked off some fine passing shots and used her power to kill the ball well. Leading 6/4, Ní Churraoin seemed to turn on the style again and not only drew level but went ahead 13/6. With this speled the end for Deirdre and although adding another point to her score Ciana took the title for a second year 15/7.

McCa doesn’t have vitt all his own way in Williamstown!

In what can only be described as a thrilling game of handball, two of the best one wallers in the country once again paired up in a repeat of last years final in the E.M.P FURNITURE Men’s Open Final in Williamstown at the weekend. Young gun McCavitt was hoping to do it all over again, while James Doyle was eager to make amends for last years disappointment. Doyle was quickest out of the blocks and a string of brilliant kills and passes soon had Conal McCavitt wondering where he was. However he didn’t let this phase him and although drawing level Doyle went on to win the first 15/13. In game two Doyle once again started well and was 9/4 up at one stage and looked to be in a commanding position. But as he had shown in the semi-final against Martin Mulkerrins, McCavitt’s grit was the game winner and he chased down many balls that looked certainly outside his reach. Add to this a few hand errors from Doyle and game two went the youngsters way on a score-line of 15/10. The tie breaker that followed was one of the best i have seen in a while and with the two players picking off score after score with some amazing shots and kills, it was a pity that one of these fine athletes had to be on the losing side. Doyle seemed to withstand the onslaught and held an 8/6 lead but was just a whisker away with a kill shot attempt that would have almost certainly won him the game. This seemed to spur on the youngster and he rallied hard to get back to 8/8, then 9/9 and eventually went on to retain the title 11/9. Pat Deane from E.M.P. Furniture then presented the two lads with their trophies and this wrapped up another successful Williamstown One Wall Tournament.

We would like to thank everyone who came along for the weekend to play in our tournament and hopefully with all the juveniles that played in it this year the future looks bright for this code of handball. We would also like to thank our sponsors for their generosity and a full list can be seen below.
